House of Skillz—a beloved barbershop that is full of life and community. I aimed to capture House of Skillz 'unique atmosphere through my lens. Each photograph serves as a mirror, reflecting the daily routines and interactions that define this lively establishment. From the conversations between the barbers and regular customers to the buzz of clippers, every aspect of life within the barbershop is captured. Through frequent visits I gained insight into both the working side of House of Skillz and variety of different customers who visit. Having grown up visiting hair salons and barbershops, I feel connected and a sense of belonging to these spaces—a sentiment rooted in fond childhood memories spent with my father and brother at Garland's barbershop in Los Angeles. These experiences instilled within me a profound sense of comfort, making the discovery of House of Skillz in New York during my college years feel like a homecoming of sorts—a flashback to home. In essence, the documentation of House of Skillz explores my own connection to these welcoming spaces and the importance of the community that it provides. Listening to the conversations that took place here paralleled my own experiences at Garland’s barbershop and reminded me that reminders of home can be sought out.
